I have one more major trip on board the Eco Abrolhos this year and it is the one I am most looking forward to. If you have never heard of the Abrolhos Islands then read the book by Peter Fitzsimmons. The Batavia was ship-wrecked hundreds of years ago when it ran aground on one of the reefs surrounding the Abrolhos Island group. The story of the ensuing fight for survival is both brutal and fascinating.
Renowned artist Larry Mitchell has also painted this amazing place with its shallow reefs and deep, blue drop-offs. Colourful coral reefs surround low-lying islands, where rough fishing huts stand perched above water-level.. The Eco Abrolhos (pictured) leaves Geraldton and steams west for about 4 hours before reaching the island group. We then explore the area for the next 5 days, snorkeling and fishing and hopefully whale watching.
I am really looking forward to sharing my trip with you which takes place in early October.
